Public Abstract

The proposed research aims to help answer a range of fundamental questions in nuclear science: How did the universe’s chemical evolution emerge? What is the nature of the neutrino? How can one make more reliable predictions for the reaction rates of isotopes not accessible in laboratories? These questions will be addressed using state-of-the-art techniques in experimental and theoretical nuclear physics. Precision mass measurements with Penning trap and time-of-flight Bρ techniques, low energy (p, n) reaction measurements, and the development of advanced nuclear theory codes enable us to make unique inroads in nuclear physics and fundamental symmetries. Our project includes experiments at national laboratories, such as the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, as well as work with experimental and computational facilities at Central Michigan University.
