Support for the 19th International Conference on Crystal Growth and Epitaxy
Joan M. Redwing, The Pennsylvania State University (Principal Investigator)
The project provides financial support to cover registration fees for graduate students and early
career researchers to attend the 19th International Conference on Crystal Growth and Epitaxy
(ICCGE-19). ICCGE-19 will be held jointly with the 19th U.S. Biennial Workshop on
Organometallic Vapor Phase Epitaxy (OMVPE-19) July 28-August 2, 2019 at the Keystone
Conference Center, Keystone, Colorado. The conference is being organized and hosted by the
American Association for Crystal Growth (AACG) under the auspices of the International
Organization for Crystal Growth (IOCG). In keeping with tradition, the 17th International
Summer School on Crystal Growth (ISSCG-17) will be held in nearby Granby, CO the week
before the conference. The international meetings (ICCGE/ISSCG) are held every three years at
a different international location and represent a 60-year history of international cooperation in
the field of crystal growth and epitaxy. The ICCGE-19 technical program consists of 27 sessions
in all aspects of crystal growth, epitaxy, characterization and applications including both general
sessions and special topical symposia. There will be approximately 700 attendees at the
conference with ~25% being graduate students or postdoctoral scholars including wide
international participation. The format of the conference is designed to encourage interaction
between speakers, attendees from academia, industry, government laboratories and vendors to
the crystal growth community.
Due to a combination of factors, participation of students and researchers in crystal growth and
epitaxy in the U.S. has been declining since the1990s despite the important role of new
crystalline materials in computing, communication and defense technologies. The request for
financial support is aimed at addressing this pipeline problem; the funds will be used specifically
to facilitate participation of early career researchers with designated financial need; encourage
their engagement with the larger crystal growth community and promote their research to an
international audience.
