Public Abstract

This grant will support the “Molecular Magnetism in North America” workshop, MAGNA 2020, to be held February 21-24, 2020, on St. Simons Island, GA. This is the second meeting in the annual MAGNA workshop series, which was established in 2019 to bring together the North American community of researchers in molecular magnetism, molecule-based 1D-3D magnetic materials, and magnetic nanoparticles. These areas comprise a wide range of systems of immense fundamental importance to many contemporary and emerging technologies spanning electronics, spintronics, classical and quantum information processing, quantum sensors, and others. Magnetism is a truly multi-disciplinary area of research, requiring effective collaboration and cross-fertilization between appropriate personnel: chemists and physicists, experimentalists and theorists, scientists and engineers, and junior and senior. Achieving this aim for the molecular and molecule-based magnetism community of North America requires an organized framework of regular meetings to provide a forum for dissemination of results by oral and poster presentations, discussion and planning of new experiments among established collaborators, and initiation of new research directions and funding initiatives from new collaborations between researchers with complementary skills. To advance these objectives, the annual MAGNA workshop was founded in 2019. MAGNA 2020 will be held February 21-24, 2020 in southeast Georgia, and in accord with the educational philosophy and objectives of the conference and the principal investigator, it will also encourage participation of students (including undergraduates) and postdoctoral researchers, with a significant number of oral presentations reserved for them. There will also be an associated poster session. The award will provide support to increase the participation of students and postdoctoral associates in the meeting and will also provide assistance to enable the participation of one junior faculty member with limited means, thus helping to provide a forum for the development of the next generation of workers in this field.
